Pearl type is one of the first things we consider when designing a piece. It affects not only color and size, but also the mood of the finished jewelry, how the pearls wear, and how they sit against the skin in natural light.
At 33 Pearl Atelier, we think of pearl type as part of the design language. A bright Akoya stud, a softly glowing South Sea pendant, and a dark Tahitian drop each create a different impression, even before shape or metal is considered.
Why Pearl Type Matters
Different pearl types vary in luster, overtone, size range, and overall presence. Choosing the right type helps a piece feel balanced, intentional, and true to the way you want to wear it.
When comparing pearls, we recommend looking at them in natural light, considering the metal tone you are drawn to, and thinking about whether the piece is meant for everyday wear, gifting, bridal use, or a more striking occasion.
Meet the Three Main Types

Before comparing details, it helps to understand the character of each type:
Akoya is often associated with the classic pearl image. It is known for bright, mirror-like luster and refined, elegant styling. Akoya is especially suited to timeless necklaces, pearl studs, and pieces that feel polished and quietly formal.
South Sea pearls are typically larger and carry a softer, more luxurious glow. Their luster often feels satin-like rather than sharply reflective. South Sea pearls are ideal when you want presence, softness, and a sense of calm refinement.
Tahitian pearls are loved for their naturally dark body colors and layered overtones. Depending on the light, they may show green, peacock, silver, aubergine, or smoky tonal shifts. Tahitian pearls are especially compelling in modern, expressive designs.
No pearl type is universally better than another. The right choice depends on style goals, budget, occasion, and the feeling you want the finished piece to carry.
How We Recommend Choosing
We usually begin with how the piece will be worn: daily, occasionally, for gifting, bridal, or as a statement. From there, we compare size comfort, color tone, and silhouette.
For custom projects, we often prepare a few options across pearl types or quality levels so they can be compared side by side before a final decision is made. Seeing the differences in person is often what makes the choice become clear.
